"Here Come The Drums, Here Come The Drums!"
"Hey there, hey there baby!"

Well, it's pretty much all kicked off in the penultimate episode of this season (although, in essence, it actually 'kicked off' last week) of DOCTOR WHO. Not as good, or as exciting, as last week, but still flippin' ace, THE SOUND OF DRUMS introduced us to SAXON who has been mentioned a few times in the last two seasons.
Of course, he was, in fact, THE MASTER. If you remember correctly, he was in last week's episode effin' everything up for the Doc and his pals (even though they got out of the cliffhanger pretty easily, hem hem) and pretty much continued to do the same except for the whole world. JOHN SIMM was fantastic as the Timelord and brought a lot of Tennant-style energy to the role. He got all the best lines just as the Devil gets all the best tunes and there were numerous nods, not only to the current series, but also to the 'classic' series. I just want to clarify that here 'classic' means old and not perfect as some geeks seem to think. The Master was seen watching 'Teletubbies' just as he watched 'The Clangers' back in the Seventies; his jacket has red lining and looked very similar to the cape he used to wear; the flashback to him as a child saw him wearing the same robes as seen in 1969's THE WAR GAMES; his LOGOPOLIS speech, "Peoples of the universe attend very carefully", was re-tooled. But I am sure you all noticed these anyway, hem hem.

That kid's gonna have problems in later life. Hold on, wasn't he in 'The Omen?

To continue the geek-themes, the 'classic' series was also revived with mentions of: U.N.I.T. (not their first mention in New-Who either); the Master seems to be fond of a Jelly Baby or two; Timelord costumes; and, my favourite, the Cloister Bell. Ok, I think we established I was a geek while ago. I ain't ashamed. There was a great flashback scene to Gallifrey when the Doc was reminiscing and, as usualm I was wondering to myself: "When are they gonna show it?" and then they did! We also saw a young Master with some other Timelords and found out he was 'insane' (like we didn't know that already). Amusingly, Martha thought (like many on the internet - not me though) that he would be the Doc's brother, to which he replied, "You've been watching too much TV". Ha ha, nice one RTD.

Gallifrey, apparently it's in Ireland.

What else? The Doctor in a car was weird. Mrs Saxon was odd. Very odd. I think they're may be more to her than meets the metaphorical 'eye'. Why did she keep crossing her fingers? She also said "Beautiful" which engendered memories of last season when the Doc used to describe everything with that adjective. Oh yeah, the aliens - the Toclafane. WTF are they all about? I guess we'll find out. The last few scenes of destruction (including an actual use of the word 'decimate' literally) were pretty, erm, awesome and the Doc (shockingly aged 100 years or so) looked beat. And then Martha effed off back to Earth! Good cliffhanger but not as good as the two prevous seasons episode twelve cliffhangers. A slight disappointment after last week but still an 'A' from me. Best season yet? I'll tell you next week.

The Valiant, do I smell another spin-off?

A friend of mine says she's turing into a workaholic.
I asked her how many pints of workahol she was drinking.

Surely the Valiant has already appeared in another show. Or does Captain Scarlet not count? Richie
